Who uses Linux?

The question should probably be "Who uses Linux on their own PC?", as we all use Linux, at least indirectly (webservers, mobile devices, etc...)

I been using MS operating systems since DOS 5 running on a 286 and have installed different Linux distributions since the mid 90's. But I never kept them for more than a week becuase the learning curve before you could actullay do something was pretty steep unless you were a coder or programmer.

A week ago I tried out Ubuntu Linux. After finding out what I needed to about partitioning my hard disk because I wanted to keep Windows as well (dual boot), I freed up disk space and gave it a go.

The installation was guided and went smooth and with the help of the built in package manager, Synaptic and one I installed later called Automatix, I didn't need to worry about typing long lines of code to get extra things running. The installation itself took less than half an hour on my laptop. My USB sound device and MIDI keyboard were detected automatically without any need for extra configuration.

Windows VISTA is something I want to stay away from for several reasons. Although after nearly 15 years using MicroSoft, it feels like leaving an old friend... but that's another matter.

I can only reccomend to everyone, get yourself a Live CD (where) the operating system boots and runs from the CD without the need for installation to try it out.

A good place for an easy pick of which Linux distribution you want to use is on one of Distrogue's pages at distrogue.awardspace.com/

I just downloaded the sabayon disto, burnt it to DVD and booted the live version. Wow is all I can say. I haven't explored it in depth yet (settings, configuration, etc...) as it just ran great on my laptop from the DVD. It even configured OpenGL automatically, which someone who's tried other distros before will know can be a pain to get running with ATI graphic chips.

I'll install on my disk within the next week or two and see about running Windows apps under wine. Maybe I can even get the free version of cedega to run.

I hope that by then this topic will have had some views by then. Feels kind of odd posting on a forum that seems to be dead...

Hi mousejunkie, you are not alone, this is the goodnews!
I have tried Ubuntu from a live CD and was impressed as to how functional the machine(PC ) became. I have moved over to an iMac about a year ago and now have bought a mac mini to get rid of the PC tower altogether. Really I wanted to avoid windows vista as I feel the system has reached its end, slowing up all machines with its complexity. I will hopefully acquire an old laptop and load the ubuntu disk on it, Perhaps one of the other releases you mention will be as good. If you are in Malta I hope the 3G network will soon be open , as then I could connect from the boat while sailing and download weather etc. At least the roaming charges for visitors will drop to the European level which will make life easier for visitors.
