The status of DAB+ Digital Radio in Malta E-mail Print

Back in May 2008, we reported that DAB+ transmission trials have started. A substantial number of developments have been registered since then, and at the moment, digital radio transmissions can be received from the major part of the Maltese territory. In order to keep up with the developments, we have contacted Sergio D'Amico from DigiBNetworks (the company responsible of deploying and maintaining DAB+ in Malta and performed a short interview. Sergio was also kind enough to provide us with a digital radio receiver to test out the service.

Maltameter: It's been over a year since DAB radio transmissions started in Malta. What feedback have you received from the general public since then? And what about consumer takeup?

DigiBNetworks: Currently takeup is at 6% which is relatively good when compared to other countries. More services will be added as broadcasters will expand their programming with niche content. Feedback is very good and positive.

Maltameter: According to information we have, only 1 channel (frequency) is being used, although the original license included 4 channels. Is there a technical or financial reason behind this, or is it due to disputes with neighbouring countries?

DigiBNetworks: No, Currently all frequencies have been rolled. All technical issues have been sorted out and we are on track.

Maltameter: We've been hearing a lot about DMB and the possibility that we might be able to receive free TV on our mobile phones and portable devices. What are the plans regarding this? And what do you see as limitiations?

DigiBNetworks: Trials have been carried out, but beyond this is commercially sensitive information.

Maltameter:
Most DMB receivers are currently only available in Korea and possibly neighbouring Asian countries. Do you see this as a problem or are they expected to start being sold in Europe in the near future?

DigiBNetworks: Mobile TV, irrespective of the technology, has not proved to be as popular in Europe. Operators are still struggling to find a model that works. Having said that, Malta has joined IDAG (International DMB Advancement Group) to address the issues that hinder the progress of DMB in Europe. Progress has been registered.

Maltameter: What are the plans for DAB and DMB for the future?
DigiBNetworks: Digi B will be introducing DAB+ radios that will retail for €40-45 in the coming months, together with the 1st in car dab+ stereo in the world. It will introduce DAB+ radios that will have the capabilities of showing Slideshows (SLS) and possibly decode MPEG surround. On the content side a new opera & classic channel will open together with a classic rock channel.
