After filling the islands with adverts about their new, "cheaper",
mobile service, Melita have finally announced the rates. Upon first
glance, call rates do appear to be cheaper, however, it highly depends
on your usage patterns. On the prepaid plan, Melita are charging
22c/min, while other operators are charging 16c or 15c per 30 seconds -
making it 32c/min. However, for the first minute, Melita are charging
the full minute immediately - so, a quick call just to say "hey I'm
almost there - just a minute" will cost you 22c, while on other
operators it will cost you 16, and if you're on the Go Mobile "Simple"
plan, it will cost you much less since it is billed per second from the
start.
To be fair, it's worth mentioning that after the first minute, calls are billed on a per-second basis on Melita, while on most plans from other operators, per-30-second billing applies for the whole length of the call. Also, if most of your calls are longer than 30s, then you're probably better off with Melita.
One other thing worth mentioning is the prepaid plans. There are different levels available, similar to other operators. What's different with Melita, however, is that you are not given "free" minutes - instead, you are given the amount you pay to use in whatever way you like. So, if you go for a plan and pay €15/month, you can use all that money on SMS's if you like.
SMS rate is 5c just like on other operators. No word yet about data plans. Also, the government levy is added on top of the pricing mentioned. So, in reality, you actually pay more than what is stated on the advert.
