After a long wait, Melita is finally almost ready to launch their 3G
mobile network throughout the Maltese territory. Unlike the two
previous launches - those by Redtouch Fone and Bay Mobile, Melita
Mobile will be a fully-fledged mobile network and not an MVNO.
Therefore, Melita will have virtually complete control over the pricing
and the way they present their services.
The promotional text on their website reads as follows:
| The days of expensive mobile bills are over! Now you can finally stop
worrying about running out of credit, and about spending too much time
on your mobile. And, because we have nothing to hide, with Melita
Mobile you will no longer get a sorehead trying to figure out how much
you are paying for your mobile service. Not only will our tariffs be
cheaper, but also much simpler to understand, with no gimmicks nor
hidden catches. |
What they have to offer exactly, we are yet to see. Hopefully, they will tackle the classic rip-off where when you top-up by say €10, an amount gets deducted from your top-up, and you get €9.46 in credits. This turns all the prices that are quoted for pay-per-use into a complete lie, because if a rate is advertised at 16c per 30 seconds, it's more like 17c in reality (16.9133192389 if you're a pedant).
The service should be launched to the general public next February, but registration for your custom "golden" number is open already.
