Saturday, 17 January 2009
Both GO and Vodafone have had a bundle combining home fixed Internet access and 3G mobile Internet access for quite a few months. Up till a few days ago, the bundle from GO was much better, offering 8Mbps ADSL (much slower in most cases due to sub par phone lines) with 100GB monthly download limit, and mobile Internet with 3GB monthly usage limit for €30.90/month (including taxes)
Vodafone now have upgraded their bundle to more or less match GO's offering. For €28/month, one now gets fixed WiMAX Internet at 4Mbps/80GB monthly limit, and 3G Internet access with 3GB monthly limit. Unlike GO's 2 year contract, Vodafone's contract is only 1 year long.

| Melita Mobile announce rates
|

Saturday, 31 January 2009
After filling the islands with adverts about their new, "cheaper", mobile service, Melita have finally announced the rates. Upon first glance, call rates do appear to be cheaper, however, it highly depends on your usage patterns. On the prepaid plan, Melita are charging 22c/min, while other operators are charging 16c or 15c per 30 seconds - making it 32c/min. However, for the first minute, Melita are charging the full minute immediately - so, a quick call just to say "hey I'm almost there - just a minute" will cost you 22c, while on other operators it will cost you 16, and if you're on the Go Mobile "Simple" plan, it will cost you much less since it is billed per second from the start.

Wednesday, 25 February 2009
Innovation is flourishing as GO Mobile has just released a new tariff - Talk & Text - identical to Melita's pre-paid topup plan. Voice calls are billed at 22c/min, featuring the same rip-off like Melita's where you are charged for a whole minute as soon as the call goes through.
On a positive note, however, GO is now also giving back the full price of some mobile phones as free credit for pre-paid users.

| Vodafone removes time windows

Sunday, 26 April 2009
As from this month, Vodafone Malta has removed time window from all its prepaid top-up vouchers, thereby leaving only GO Mobile as the only operator (apart from MVNOs) that forces time windows. Although this change does not affect most people, it does affect a significant portion of the population especially those who only use their mobile phone for emergencies.

| MTV Mobile launched in Malta

Sunday, 26 April 2009
After a heavy marketing campaign, MTV Mobile has been launched in Malta. From the customers' point of view, MTV Mobile is similar to most MVNOs such as Bay Mobile and RedTouch Phone, however, this one is not being operated by a third party company that gets the service from an operator, but is being fully managed by the operator itself - in this case GO Mobile.
Unfortunately, for all those who are not interested in downloading MTV content, MTV Mobile does not have much to offer. The only thing we were hoping for was better mobile Internet prices since they actually mentioned that one of their aims is to enable Internet access from the mobile phone. However, disappointingly, the fee is still at 7c/60KB, just like most other operators, making such a claim totally nonsense.

| Melita Mobile removes charging of full first minute
|
 |

Sunday, 26 April 2009
When Melita Mobile was launched, our main concern was that they charged for a whole minute as soon as the call was connected, making it really expensive for those who are used to making very short calls just to say something quick. This however is no more of an issue, because now all calls are charged per second from the first second. With the price of 22c/min for prepaid, now Melita can honestly claim that at the moment, they have the lowest prices in Malta. Whether we're experiencing the start of a price war that will bring prices even lower, we have yet to see.

| GO starts offering WiMAX
|

Saturday, 20 June 2009
GO has recently announced that WiMAX now forms part of its services portfolio. Although the announcement lacks a number of details such as whether there is full coverage in the Maltese islands, the pricing and specifications have been announced. The price is €13.86 per 30 days with 2Mbps/512Kbps speed - exactly the cheapest ADSL package on offer. The only advantage we are able to see in this offering is that it does not require a fixed telephone line, so those who don't need it may save some money. The savings however may never come into fruition. Digging deeper in the Terms of Service document, there's a clause saying that the customer has to buy all the equipment and pay for the installation for the cost of €500.

| Melita upgrades Internet speed
|
 |

Tuesday, 23 June 2009
Melita has just announced a speed upgrade to 2 of its connections. The 2Mbps connection now stands at 5Mbps, with the same old price of €13.85 per month, although temporarily it's half that price for the first 3 months due to a trade fair offer. The 30Mbps connection which costs €100 monthly has now also been upgraded to 50Mbps. No word from GO yet regarding similar upgrades, but considering that a large amount of GO lines can't even reach 4Mbps, we doubt any upgrade is coming any time soon.
