Melita to improve mobile coverage, introduce HDTV E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Monday, 01 February 2010

Melita is to invest €3m in 2010 and a further €2m in the following 2 years to further improve mobile coverage. Since coverage seems to always have been the weakest point for Melita Mobile, this should be a very important upgrade for the company's offering. Also, to make up for the fact that Italian and English football rights for the following 3 years was lost to GO Plus TV, Melita Cable TV will be doubling the number of channels offered. Apart from that, Melita is to launch HDTV in the first half of the year. These announcements come a few days later from the announced "Unlimited Calls" "upgrade" in which not all customers would benefit because while previously on a €15 prepaid account you would be getting €15 of credit to spend however you like, you are now restricted to a number of minutes and a number of SMS's to other networks, and free calls only to Melita customers. Considering that most numbers you would be calling are probably not Melita numbers, this supposed upgrade is actually a downgrade.

Melita Mobile & Vodafone now giving full topup value E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Saturday, 26 September 2009

For the last few years, whenever you topped-up a prepaid mobile subscription, you didn't get the full value of your topup. In fact, out of a €10 top up, you only got €9.46. The excuse from the mobile operators was that this was because of the 3% government levy on mobile phone usage that was introduced a few years back, and the increase in VAT from 15% to 18%. However, this complicated the way phone usage costs are calculated, because the advertised rates weren't true at all, because you had to add around 5.7% to that price.

In the last 2 weeks, however, Melita Mobile removed this service charge, and started giving the full value on all topups. A few days later, Vodafone complied. No news has come from GO as whether they will remove this charge. One thing's for sure, however - GO seem to be lagging behind.

Melita Mobile now charges 10c/1MB E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Monday, 24 August 2009

Prepaid mobile Internet access has been charged at 7c/60KB for a long time by all Maltese operators, in a way that every session is charged 7c at minimum, making it practically useless for anything. To load a single page could cost you over €1, and to get some email or RSS notification would cost you 7c every time your mobile phone checks for updates. Vodafone have recently offered a solution for this by paying for a bundle of €1 per day for the days when you need access. Melita Mobile however went for the no-strings-attached way, with a new rate of 10c per Megabyte transferred - charged at 1KB increments. Up till now, this is the only rate being offered by Melita. No bundles or contracts are being offered at the time.

The status of DAB+ Digital Radio in Malta E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Thursday, 06 August 2009

Back in May 2008, we reported that DAB+ transmission trials have started. A substantial number of developments have been registered since then, and at the moment, digital radio transmissions can be received from the major part of the Maltese territory. In order to keep up with the developments, we have contacted Sergio D'Amico from DigiBnetwork (the company responsible of deploying and maintaining DAB+ in Malta and performed a short interview. Sergio was also kind enough to provide us with a digital radio receiver to test out the service.

GO launches prepaid Blackberry E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Saturday, 18 July 2009

In what seems to be a desperate attempt to react to Vodafone's prepaid Internet offerings, GO has launched a prepaid Blackberry service. The advert on their website states "Stay in touch for €9.99". Reading the fine print reveals that €9.99 is for a 10-day subscription. 30, 90, and 180-day prepaid subscriptions are also available. What gets us wondering is why a Blackberry phone owner would want to use its power for only 10 days. Maybe the readers can provide a bit of inspiration regarding who might actually need this.

Vodafone to start offering prepaid mobile Internet packages E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Thursday, 16 July 2009

Vodafone is going to be the first Maltese mobile operator that offers decent Internet pricing for those subscribers that use prepaid rather than pay monthly plan. The way it is being presented is that when one needs to access the Internet, a package can be bought. Although not official yet, the system should work by sending an SMS to a specific number, which would deduct the applicable amount from the prepaid credit.

Bay Mobile closing down E-mail Print
Written by HiVoltage
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

Saturday 4th July will mark the last business day for Bay Mobile after just 10 months since launch. Bay Mobile was the first MVNO to open its doors in Malta. However, many argued that their business plan of simply attracting young people by offering free party tickets when they join simply wasn't enough for most people to consider switching. Apparently, they were right. Current Bay Mobile customers are being offered a special deal if they switch to Melita Mobile. Meanwhile, RedTouch Fone remains the only MVNO standing.
